Topping Out Mission Critical Projects Coast-To-Coast

Have you noticed data centers popping up all over the place, particularly throughout Northern Virginia? As the demand for internet use and data storage increases, our teams are actively building data centers for clients and end-users across the country to keep up with needs nationwide. With all this new, ground-up construction comes an exciting time for our team members, clients, and partners when the shell of the project is complete – a topping out celebration! A topping out occurs when the last structural steel or concrete beam is placed on the frame of any ground-up construction project. It’s tradition for everyone involved in the project to sign the beam to commemorate their hard work on the completed building exterior.

Last year, we celebrated more than 10 topping out ceremonies – most of which were mission critical data centers. We kicked the year off by topping out DC16. At four stories tall, this project was particularly exciting because it’s the tallest data center built on the entire East Coast! DC16 topped out after drilling 134 caissons, moving 25,000 cubic yards (CY) of dirt, erecting 1,145 pieces of precast, and pouring nearly 9,000 CY of concrete.

Another exciting celebration was our recent topping out for our latest data center project in partnership with QTS. Located in Richmond, Virginia, our teams erected two 332,776-sf buildings as part of a larger data center campus. We celebrated this milestone alongside 400+ team members, subcontractor partners, and clients. We also topped out another QTS data center that was 320,000 sf with 18 MW in Northern Virginia.

In October, we went on to top out the first of several buildings on a 140+ acre campus for Corscale Data Centers in Northern Virginia. Upon completion of the campus, this lot will host 300 megawatts of power!

One of our most recent confidential mission critical projects made the topping out celebration even more memorable by using the signed steel beam on the exterior of the building so that it can be seen by everyone and can commemorate all of the team members who worked on the project, even once the walls are in place.

We recently celebrated a landmark topping out for mission critical technology client, QTS Data Centers, near Portland, Oregon. Each building of the new campus spans 156,921 square feet and contains 4,436 tons of steel in its structure. Upon completion, each building will house 36 MW.

What an exciting year of project milestones for our mission critical project teams, subcontractors, partners, and clients. We look forward to continued growth and more celebrations to come.
