Sending Off our Summer Interns with New Construction Experience

This summer, 73 HITT Futures interns joined our teams nationwide for a 10-week, hands-on experience. Our immersive, award-winning program provides interns with the skills they need for a career in the construction industry and beyond. Future leaders who came from far and wide including from the University of Southern California, Villanova, and the University of Texas joined us in making this summer a memorable one. They specialized in everything from construction to corporate resources such as legal and marketing, and they participated in carefully planned activities that strengthened their networking, leadership, and project management skills.

“The Futures program has truly been a wonderful introduction to the construction industry for me. Everyone you meet at this company is passionate about what they do and willing to help you learn as much as you can. Not only have I learned so much about construction, but I have also broadened my networking abilities, subcontractor relationships, and gained invaluable experience for my future career. I am so thankful to HITT and my team for the opportunities and experiences I have had these past 10 weeks,” said Emme Williams, a building construction major at Virginia Tech.

Interns catch onto The HITT Way quickly by learning our core values. Staying true to our core value of “Be the Good”, Our interns put their building skills to the test by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and constructing row homes in their local communities. This team-building experience allows interns to give back locally in a collaborative way.

Throughout this summer, meaningful connections were made through internal company networking. Interns were tasked with conducting an interview with a team member in a different sector than themselves. This allows interns to learn more about the industry as a whole. Our annual intern/sponsor hike was another fan favorite that allowed team members to connect with one another outside of the office or jobsite.

Each week, one full day was dedicated to curriculum, with plenty of topics to cover within the internship’s 10 weeks. These sessions varied from lunch and learns with subcontractors partners to a Q&A fireside chat with HITT’s Principal Leadership Team. They engaged in discussions on professionalism in the workplace, training on useful software such as Procore, and more.

Malloch Henderson, a civil engineering student at West Virginia University, shares, “With construction management encompassing so many different industry areas, it can be a real challenge to find what industry you enjoy the most. The intern classes do a great job of not only teaching us about the specialty industries like virtual construction and preconstruction, but it also gives us the opportunity to talk with the other interns about the industry they are working in and what they like about it. HITT doesn’t push us in any one direction, they allow us to explore other industries and experiment within our position based off our likes and dislikes, all the while setting us up the best they can for any future we want to have. My favorite thing about the HITT Futures program is seeing how I have grown in soft skills, creating connections, and building relationships.“

We’re so pleased that this program has undoubtedly left a positive impact on these talented individuals, preparing them for success not only in the construction industry, but also in their future endeavors. We look forward to seeing their continued growth and achievements. To learn more about the HITT Futures program, visit www.hitt.com/futures
